Things I learnt along the way.

Development discussion.

Moody Pink-Lit Office Conversation

Mr Boss asked me how I would like to develop my role.

I was excited.
I knew what I wanted.
I wanted to move forward.
I had asked for it.
I had worked for it.
I had taken on more responsibility.
I was already doing more than my role asked of me.
So I was ready.
Ready to talk about the next step.
A promotion.
More responsibility.
More room to make decisions.

I thought we were going to talk about where I was going.
Then reality hit me in the face.
Instead, I was told we were going in a different direction.
Apparently, backwards.
And I was told there wouldn't be a change.
That was it.

I sat there trying to understand how a discussion about development had somehow ended with me moving backwards.

Not because I had failed.
Not because I couldn't handle more.
I had already shown that I could.
I had asked to move forward.
I had acted like I was moving forward.
I had taken the responsibility.

But apparently, none of that meant I was going anywhere.
Silly me.
I thought development meant moving forward.
Apparently, backwards counts too.
At least now I know what to expect from my next development discussion.
Less.
